SCENARIOS

The following scenarios are based on actual customers and are fairly typical for our customer base. They have been sanitized to protect the identity of the customer involved.

Scenario I - Law Firm
A law firm with offices throughout the world noticed a tendency of lost cases and negotiations running sour, as soon as companies or organisations from a certain country, lets call it Country A, were involved on the other side. Rumors circulated in the lawyer community about Country A routinely using intercepted communications to support its economy. So the law firm started looking for a communications security solution, especially for their highly mobile partners, who spend a lot of their time on the mobile phone. Several solutions were tested and evaluated. A solution was found that looked very elegant and convenient. During the evaluation of the solution, it became known that the company producing this solution was heavily involved with Country A. Circumstantial evidence was found that looked like a cryptographic backdoor, mandated by the government of Country A, that is by default built into the encryption system. So there was a high likelihood that this specific encryption could be removed by Country A with ease.

Frustrated by this experience, the law firm turned to GSMK as they felt that only a truly independent, fully verifiably solution could solve their problem. GSMK provided the law firm's partners with GSMK CryptoPhone 200 units and an on-site secure communications behaviour crash-course within two days. Speed was essential, as the law firm represented an important client in critical negotiations. As a result of the quick deployment, the negotiations could be completed with great success.

Scenario II - Raw Metals Trader
Metals Trade Corp. (name changed) is a medium sized player in the international raw and scrap metals trade business. The company is under heavy competitive pressure. Especially critical is the protection of producer relationships, as pricing and production levels swing widely and have a strong influence on the bottom line of Metals Trade Corp. On several occasions the owner of Metals Trade Corp. noticed attempts by two competing companies to undercut his pricing and interfere with an established producer relationship of his company. Circumstances led to the possibility that the competitors had access to Metals Trade communication contents.

As one of the competitors comes from a region where traditionally the division between government and business interests is not very sharp, Metals Trade Corp. had to assume that the attack on its communications was at least partially supported by government ressources. So only a full strength cryptography solution could solve the problem. Metals Trade Corp. bought at first four units from GSMK to evaluate functionality and usability. After four weeks of intensive testing they came back to GSMK to purchase GSMK CryptoPhone 200 units for all their trade representatives and placed a pre-order for the GSMK CryptoPhone landline solution, to equip all their branch offices and partners with a secure communications solution.

Scenario III - Police Organisation
An investigative police branch faced serious problems with a large-scale organized crime syndicate. Due to the huge profits gained from their illegal business, the criminals could afford a serious wiretapping operation against the very police officers that were investigating against them. Police operations went nowhere, undercover officers were burned.

The police force asked GSMK to provide them with GSMK CryptoPhone 200 devices to equip all the officers involved in the case. GSMK shipped a substantial number of units within one week and provided training material on secure communications methods for the officers . The whole deployment took place within two weeks after order. Within days the police regained the capability to conduct covert investigations and could gather enough evidence to bust the crime ring after four further months of work. Police officers were especially happy about the inconspicuous exterior of the CryptoPhone, which is not distinguishable from a normal PDA-phone. During the following months, GSMK CryptoPhones were introduced as standard means of secure communication for the whole upper echelon of the police force and for Minister of Interior Affairs personal.

Scenario IV - Human Rights NGO
Human Rights defenders face multiple problems in several areas of the world. Most of the time hostile governments with a bad human rights track record want to prevent crimes against humanity from getting documented. So they habitually intercept all communications from private organisations that try to do something about human rights abuses. This kind of interception routinely leads to arrests or even killings of local informers and activists, as their identities get compromised. Public activities that are to be coordinated with foreign support groups are prevented by the hostile government, because they know beforehand from intercepted communication.

A well respected international human rights organisation approached GSMK to see what could be done about these problems. GSMK designed a solution for them that provided the local activists in the country with the free Windows-based CryptoPhone client as a widely distributed base layer of security. Members of the international support group were equipped with GSMK CryptoPhone 200 phones, so they could be reached and communicate when traveling. A special quickly deployable reporting team of the organisation has been equipped with the GSMK solution for the Thuraya satellite network. Using the satellite based systems they can communicate without dependence on local infrastructure and also from remote areas. As satellite communications can also be intercepted, the encryption of the satellite calls is essential to provide the necessary confidentiality.
